Blackjack Rules

Players aim to achieve a hand value as close to 21 as possible and have a better hand than the dealer

Objective: The goal of Blackjack is to have a hand value as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it while also having a higher hand value than the dealer

Setup:

  1. 2 or more players, one person needs to play as the dealer

  2. Blackjack is typically played with a standard 52-card decks

  3. Players place their bets before the cards are dealt (Optional, only applies if playing with chips)

  4. Number cards 2 through 10 are worth their face value

  5. Face cards (King, Queen, Jack) are each worth 10 points

  6. Aces can be worth either 1 or 11 points, depending on which value benefits the hand more.

Instructions

Step 1

Players and the dealer are dealt two cards each. Players' cards are usually dealt face up, while one of the dealer's cards is face up (the "upcard"), and the other is face down (the "hole card").

If a player is dealt an Ace and a 10-value card (10, Jack, Queen, King), they have a "Blackjack" unless the dealer also has a Blackjack, resulting in dealer winning

Step 2

Players decide whether to "hit" (take an additional card) or "stand" (keep their current hand) if they do not have 21, with a goal to get to 21 as close as possible

Note: Players can continue to hit until they decide to stand or each a hand value over 21 ("Bust")

Step 3

Once all players have completed their turns, the dealer reveals their hole card.

  • The dealer must hit until their hand value is at least 17 and then must stand. All players with hands better than the dealer and have not busted yet in the round are winners of the round

  • If the dealer busts, players that have not busted win the round

Step 4

The players with a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding 21 wins. For all non-blackjack, a tie results in a "push," and the player's bet is returned

Special situation: Split

If players holds two cards that are the same number in their hand, like two sevens or two kings, they can split them apart and play each card like two separate hands instead of one (two chances to play)

Players play the hand to their right first. The dealer will give them cards when the player ask for a “hit.”Player will continue to hit until they are satisfied or they bust. Then, player moves to play the other hand and have the dealer hit them with cards until player says “stop” or goes over 21.

If the player have a pair of aces and splits them, the dealer will give only one additional card per hand. They cannot hit again. If the player hit with a 10 on the second card, they have 21 and the dealer must play to see if they can hit 21

(If playing with chips, if you split your two cards into two hands, you’ll place your original bet with one hand and place an equal bet on the second, split hand. If players go over 21, they lose their bet on the associated hand)
